Grasshopper Club Zürich has been relegated after 70 years in the top flight. The Swiss record champions lost to FC Luzern on Sunday with a score of 0:4 and were relegated. The fans of Grasshopper Club Zürich forced a match abandonment, after they had gathered at the edge of the field and made it impossible to continue the game safely. Grasshopper Club Zürich's coach, Uli Forte, was visibly shaken and called the relegation a black day for the entire Swiss football. The relegation had been looming for a long time, as the club has been waiting for a win for 18 games, since October 2018. Heinz Lindner, the goalkeeper of Grasshopper Club Zürich, said that the decision to take off their jerseys was not humiliating if it had helped to prevent violence or riots. The club explained the actions on their website afterwards and emphasized that the safety of the players and that of the peaceful fans in the stadium is the most important asset. Grasshopper Club Zürich will compete in the Challenge League next season and try to achieve promotion.
