Grasshopper Club Zürich has parted ways with coach Gerald Scheiblehner, effective immediately. The Swiss Super League club is reacting to the sporting situation in the league. Until the end of the season, Gernot Messner will take over as interim coach of the Zurich traditional club. The 45-year-old Austrian was previously responsible for the U21 team. The move is a result of the sporting situation in the Swiss Super League. The Swiss record champion is currently in second-to-last place in the table and has only a five-point lead over the direct relegation spot. Under the former coach of FC Blau-Weiß Linz, the team managed only five wins in 30 league games, most recently suffering a 1-5 defeat against league leader FC Thun. GC sports director Alain Sutter stated in the club's announcement: „The decision was not easy for us. We had a very good and trusting relationship with Gerald, Alex, and Toni. However, after a thorough analysis, we have come to the conclusion that we want to set a new impulse for the remaining phase of the season.“ The GC has only won once in the last twelve league games. The situation is therefore more than critical for the Zurich club. And now Gernot Messner has to lead the club out of the crisis. The Austrian has a big task ahead of him. So it will be interesting to see how the GC performs in the next games.
